The Island of Hawaiʻi Visitors Bureau and Hawaii Department of Transportation sought an effective way to keep visitors informed about emergency protocols while ensuring the messaging blended seamlessly into the airport environment. The challenge was to create a solution that was both highly visible and easy for travelers to engage with.
Hawaii Airport Advertising designed and installed messaging pillars at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) rental car shuttle stations. These pillars featured an “In Case of Emergencies” message accompanied by a QR code. The QR code directed users to the Hawaii County Civil Defense website, providing instant access to critical information when needed.
The initiative successfully combined public safety with innovative design. The messaging pillars have averaged 25 scans per week, demonstrating consistent engagement with the emergency preparedness content. This project highlights how strategic airport advertising can enhance visitor experiences while addressing crucial safety concerns.
